Does anyone have ideas on what to replace the glass in our coffee tables with?

My wife and I would like to replace the glass in our coffee and end tables with something other than glass. I thought this might be something that other people have done in the past but I cannot find any info on the net. I thought of using 20″ X 20″ porcelain tile but it may be too heavy and Lowes does not have a wet saw big enough to cut it (you would think they would but they don’t – at least at my local Lowes). I’m looking for something light but sturdy. Other suggestions have been fiberboard covered with some sort of leather cover. I’d really appreciate some info if anyone has done this or has good ideas. Thanks!

The fiberboard covered with leather would be nice.

You don’t say what color your table is, but you could use melamine (I think I spelled that correctly), if white.

Also take fiberboard and buy little tiles, (there are some gorgeous little glass tiles) or even 3×3 ceramics.

Also, you could use river rock that might look nice.

I think you project totally depends on your family, some of the items wouldn’t be as durable for little truck drivers…

you could get a piece of oak veneer or another wood. you didnt say what the legs were so i dont know if they are iron or wood. you could use smaller tiles like a 4 inch or even a mosic and put a pattern on it. I saw one where they put in a pick of masinite and then used old broken dishes that were family heirlooms but had been broken during a storm. I likes that idea because noe they still have the heirloom. but in a differnt form.

You might consider either a matching or contrasting wood. And if you want to get fancy, you could add a decorative border or center inlay. Rocker has a number of them at the link below.

Boy i would use glass tile like the one by one inch tile and there are so many styles to chose from. You will need to put a back on it like a piece of three quarter ply wood if it doesn’t have a back and the tile with mastic and goute will add maybe twenty pound if that to the table. You could use metal also.
