The mama cat disciplines by picking the baby up and giving a light shake. Its been done by every mother cat. Never shake hard. Pay attention on how lightly you give the shake. You wont hurt the kitty. She wont hate you. Animals are just like kids, they wont hate you. They will give you love and respect back. Human kids we say "No" to. Animals get their message when they get treated by their parent. "No" does get learned eventually but teaching the animal by its own instinct gets the message across more clear and so quicker. Since YOU are the parent of that kitty, do what a mama cat does. EDIT: the squirt bottle does get them to stop for a while or certain times but it will never completely stop them even when they are adults. Wont stop them if you have butter sitting on the table. They will be more afraid of YOU with that squirt bottle in your hand more than thinking of getting back up on the table. I have tried the squirt bottle way for a while to get my cat to stop putting her claws on the screen door. It works but only temporary and then they run behind the couch or under the bed.
